The Benefits of Being Self Taught

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

school chalkboard

It’s easy to sometimes wonder what would have been had I realized my passion for technology and design at a younger age and took a more traditional academic route to build my skills. But those thoughts usually creep in on bad days, during a difficult project or when I’m searching for answers or help with some aspect that’s become a challenge.

Most days, I have no problem with the fact that I’m mostly self taught, in fact I’m proud of the fact and at times wonder if this hasn’t actually helped with some of the issues I’ve faced while working. (more…)

Do They Know How Great You Really Are?

The other morning, I came across this great post about applying for web design jobs. I’ve been running in to so much negative information lately, this one was a welcome and needed breath of fresh air! It caught my attention but in a good way.

Give Your Site Design Super Powers! Learn to Bulletproof with Dan Cederholm

Image of the book, Bullet Proof Web Design

I’ve written several times about all the great resources online for web designers; free tutorials, videos, blogs, I love them all! But there are definitely times when I really want the convenience and comfort of a bound, paper book to read and carry with me. (Maybe I’m an old fashioned girl…) With so many books on web design out these days, I don’t always know which ones will make the best investment. As much as I love to read, spending time and money on a terrible book invokes the same anger and disappointment as walking out of the theatre after seeing a terrible movie – I want those hours and dollars back!

Luckily, my time and hard earned cash has been extremely well spent over the past few weeks on Bullet Proof Design by Dan Cederholm. (more…)

The Redesign Process – Tranquil Hearts

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

design tools

Susan Wright, founder of Tranquil Hearts, is one of those dream clients everyone hopes for. Easy to communicate and work with, she knows what she wants and what will not work for her and is so laid back and positive, the process of building her initial web site could not have been a more smooth and happy experience. Months later, speaking to Susan about her business and web site, I jumped at the chance to work with her further on redesigning the site to better communicate who Susan is and what her work is all about. Becoming UnStuck (or Creating Your Own Map)

Monday, May 31st, 2010

map, compass and glasses

I feel like I’ve written a lot in the past about being “stuck”, whether it’s having trouble coming up with ideas, looking for design or color inspiration or just feeling like you’re hitting a wall.

But is there anything more panic inducing? More frustrating and scary? Maybe it’s just that way for me.

I like to have a plan. (more…)

Designers and Code

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Should designers know how to code?

This is such an old argument/discussion but a heated one in the web community and it’s always interesting to me when it comes up, listening at all points presented and how passionate the debate can become. (more…)

Why I’m so addicted to Twitter (and why it’s a good thing!)

twitter bird

Just last June, I had blogged about my first uses of Twitter, just dipping my toes in to test the water. It felt awkward at first for sure but I kept trying and looking around and soon I’d felt I was getting the hang of things. But as my affection for other similar sites have dwindled with time, I still have a hard time using my computer for very long without at least logging in to my Twitter account just to see what’s going on, even if I really have nothing to say. Part II – The Re-Design Challenge Continues

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Already feeling the pressure of this challenge, I’ve been working a few things this weekend. Posting my ideas have made me at least feel accountable, like I can’t let any of my usual excuses and procrastination allow me to just push this to the back burner as I have in the past, but maybe that’s just the fire I needed to get on the right path. Whatever the reason, I’m already in motion!

Design Inspiration – Getting Past the Wall

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Sometimes when working on a project, ideas just seem to flow and let me tell you, those are beautiful days. I always research, sketch and play with different ideas of my own but those days, the feeling is very natural and smooth and I don’t even notice how long I’ve been working. But when the block hits, it hits hard and I struggle getting past it. Sort of a writers block but I guess I’d call it “creative block” where I’m just not happy with what I’ve sketched or built, nothing seems to look right and I can’t seem to get the image or idea I may have in my head on to the screen.
